Roy Lichtenstein, Drowning Girl, 1963, MoMA

Who doesn’t love comics? Especially funny and satirical ones, in the style of the famous Pop artist Roy Lichtenstein…

As you know by now, the theme of this month’s Smart Art Box is Pop Art, and we are mining this art movement for tons of arts and crafts ideas for you to do at home!

Pop responded to the cultural attitudes of the 1950s and 1960s, and all the new consumer items and advertisements that invaded the marketplace. Pop took everyday objects, images and themes from the mass media and popular culture and turned them into artwork. In his paintings, Lichtenstein appropriated comic strips to comment on the newfound meaning and pervasiveness in this medium.

And we think comics make excellent greeting card material!

Here’s what you’ll need:

  1. Any photograph with one or more people depicted
  2. Tracing paper
  3. Card stock and envelope
  4. Markers (or why not use your Faber Castell Gelatos Color Set and Big Brush Pen in black, all found in your Smart Art Box!)
  5. Glue

Steps:

First, take your photograph and trace around the edges of the person (or people) you’d like to depict until you get a clear outline. Don’t forget to add a thought bubble. Once you’re happy with the drawing, take your Brush Pen and trace a thick black outline around the drawing. Fill in color with Castell Gelatos or your paint/markers of choice. You can also make color using Ben-Day Dots in true comic art / Lichtenstein style! Then, add an ironically funny message in the thought bubble. Lastly, paste the tracing paper onto your card stock and stamp away!

And as usual, the final step is taking a photo and sharing your work on Social Media with the hashtag #smartartbox! We can’t wait to see what you’ve made!
